About Virtual Boy

The Virtual Boy was Nintendo's attempt to bring stereoscopic 3D gaming to a home system, positioned between portable and console concepts as a tabletop unit. Designed by Gunpei Yokoi and released in 1995, it used a red-and-black display to deliver a consistent faux-3D image through a pair of mirrored LED displays.

Hardware limitations, an awkward stand-based form factor, and a library that never expanded far beyond niche appeal led to a brief commercial life. Despite its failure, the system became historically notable for its bold experimental design and for influencing later discussions of 3D interfaces and immersive gaming concepts.
