How it plays

How does Star Fox 64 play?

The main campaign is viewed from behind the Arwing and moves along guided flight paths, although some missions allow greater movement within an arena. The objective is usually to defeat enemy formations, protect allies, destroy a major target, or defeat a boss.

Players steer, fire lasers, charge shots, use bombs, boost, brake, and perform barrel rolls. Completing optional tasks can open alternate routes through the Lylat System. Shields, laser upgrades, wing damage, and score affect survival and medal progress.

Multiplayer supports competitive battles in arenas and selected vehicles. Unlockable Expert mode increases the challenge and changes some gameplay conditions.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Star Fox 64?

Protect allied wingmen when practical, because their survival can influence available routes and support during later encounters.

Use charged laser shots against durable targets, and save bombs for dense formations or bosses. Learn when to boost and brake rather than holding one speed throughout a stage.

Replay missions to find route triggers, score opportunities, and medal requirements. Repair or replace damaged wings before entering difficult later stages when the game allows it.
