How it plays
The game uses a side-view perspective. Gogan travels from left to right through several platforming areas filled with creatures, traps, vertical obstacles, and bosses.
The player jumps across gaps, climbs ladders, collects power-ups, and attacks with an axe. Axe strength improves through weapon items, while damage and missed jumps can quickly consume the limited life supply. Progress is stage-based, with boss encounters marking major sections of the adventure.
Plan your run
Stay patient and learn enemy patterns rather than rushing into groups. Upgrade the axe whenever possible, but avoid trading hits with large enemies.
Use the edges of platforms carefully, check vertical routes before jumping, and preserve lives for boss encounters. Short attacks followed by repositioning are safer than continuous close-range swings.
Meet the cast
The playable warrior who carries the legendary axe and sets out to rescue his kidnapped lover.
Before you begin
Treat the axe as a timing weapon; attacking too early can leave Gogan vulnerable.
Look for weapon power-ups and approach bosses with as many lives and health resources as possible.
The Legendary Axe is a side-scrolling fantasy action game developed by Atlus and published by Hudson Soft for the PC Engine in 1988. The player controls Gogan, a warrior who must fight through hostile wilderness and ruins to rescue his kidnapped lover. Its core play style combines deliberate axe attacks, jumping, enemy avoidance, and exploration across demanding platforming stages. The game is known for its weighty combat, large and dangerous enemies, and limited margin for error. It received a positive historical reputation among PC Engine titles, particularly for its graphics, sound, and challenging arcade-inspired action, although its difficulty can be unforgiving for new players.
