Optimus Primal
Leader of the Maximals and a gorilla-based warrior.
How it plays
Matches take place in enclosed 3D arenas viewed from a third-person perspective. The objective is to deplete the opponent’s health before the opponent defeats the selected character.
Players move around the arena, attack at close or long range, transform between available forms, and use the environment to create distance. The main progression is a character-based series of battles, with versus play providing direct matches against another player or the computer.
Plan your run
Keep moving instead of standing in front of the opponent, especially against characters with strong projectiles. Use transformation to change the distance and attack options, then return to the form that best suits the current exchange.
Learn each arena’s boundaries and hazards, and save powerful attacks for moments when the opponent cannot easily sidestep. In versus matches, controlling space is generally safer than repeatedly attempting close-range attacks.

Transformers: Beast Wars Transmetals is a 3D fighting game developed by Takara for the Nintendo 64 and based on the Beast Wars animated series. Players choose a Maximal or Predacon and battle across arenas while switching between robot, beast, and Transmetal forms. The roster draws heavily from the show’s second-season era, including Optimus Primal, Megatron, Cheetor, and Rampage. Its play style combines arena movement, projectile attacks, transformations, and close-range strikes rather than traditional two-dimensional round-based combat. Reception was mixed: reviewers recognized the licensed characters and unusual transformation mechanic, but criticized the uneven combat, camera behavior, and visual limitations of the Nintendo 64 version.
