How it plays

How does Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar play?

The player controls the Avatar from an overhead perspective while exploring Britannia, towns, shrines, wilderness, and dungeons. Conversations provide clues, recruit companions, and reveal the virtue system's central questions.

Turn-based combat switches to a tactical battlefield. The party can move, attack, cast spells, use items, and exploit terrain. Progress comes from learning virtue principles, improving equipment and abilities, recruiting allies, finding the eight virtue shrines, and ultimately obtaining the Codex of Ultimate Wisdom.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar?

Ask townspeople the same questions in different locations and record their clues; many objectives are discovered through conversation rather than explicit markers.

  • Build a balanced party with reliable melee attackers, support magic, and healing.
  • Visit shrines and study the associated mantras before attempting the final pilgrimage.
  • Preserve healing items and spell points for dungeons, where terrain and enemy placement matter.
  • Practice the virtues consistently; dishonest or cruel choices can work against Avatar progress.
