Umihara Kawase
A young traveling sushi chef and the playable protagonist. She carries a fishing rod whose elastic line is the central movement and combat tool.
How it plays
The game uses a side-view perspective. Kawase must reach the exit of each self-contained stage while avoiding or defeating fish and managing hazards such as water, pits, and platforms.
Her fishing line can attach to surfaces and enemies. Players use it to pull, swing, climb, redirect momentum, and create safer routes. Stages are selected through connected exits, and later areas demand increasingly precise control of the line and the character’s movement.
Plan your run
Treat the fishing line as a physics tool rather than a simple grappling hook. Short casts are useful for changing direction, while long casts can create large swings and launch Kawase across gaps.
Study each stage before committing to a route. Keep distance from fish when possible, use platforms to control the line’s angle, and avoid releasing the line until Kawase’s momentum is favorable.
Meet the cast

Before you begin
Practice swinging and line retraction in early stages before attempting difficult routes.
A careful approach is usually safer than repeatedly attacking fish.
Use the stage layout to anchor the line and preserve momentum.
Umihara Kawase is a Japanese platform-puzzle game developed and published by TNN for the Super Nintendo in 1994. It follows a young traveling sushi chef who uses a fishing rod and elastic line to navigate surreal waterways filled with hostile fish. Instead of relying only on conventional jumps, the game emphasizes momentum, pendulum movement, and careful manipulation of the line. Its interconnected stages and demanding physics give it a distinctive play style closer to an action puzzle game than a straightforward platformer. The game became known for its unusual mechanics, high difficulty, and expressive movement, earning a strong reputation among players who enjoy experimentation and precision.
