How it plays
The game uses a behind-the-craft perspective on a continuously scrolling vertical route. The objective is to survive each stage, destroy enemies, collect power-ups, and defeat the boss at the end of the area.
The fighter can operate in two depth planes. Switching planes helps avoid attacks and obstacles and can expose targets that are otherwise difficult to hit. Movement within the current plane is handled with the directional pad, while the ship's weapon is used continuously or in repeated shots. Progression comes from temporary weapon improvements and completion of successive stages.
Plan your run
Stay near the center of the playfield until enemy patterns are clear, then move decisively rather than making small reactive corrections.
Before you begin
The depth-plane switch is central to both defense and targeting.
Power-ups are temporary advantages, so survival is more important than collecting every item.
Vertical Force is a first-person-style vertical scrolling shoot 'em up developed and published by Hudson Soft for Nintendo's Virtual Boy. The player pilots a compact fighter through a series of hostile environments, destroying enemy formations, avoiding hazards, and collecting upgrades. Its defining feature is the ability to shift the craft between two attack planes, creating a distinctive use of the Virtual Boy's stereoscopic display. The game is structured as a linear arcade-style mission with frequent enemy waves and large bosses rather than a story-heavy campaign. Contemporary reception was mixed: its depth effect and straightforward action were appreciated, while its short length, limited variety, and Virtual Boy's uncomfortable viewing experience were commonly noted.
