Anubis
A jackal-headed Egyptian warrior who uses mystical attacks and close-range strikes.
How it plays
War Gods is played from a behind-the-character 3D perspective. The objective is to defeat an opponent in a best-of-three-round match by reducing the opponent's life bar before time expires. Players can walk around the arena, attack with punches and kicks, block, jump, throw, and perform character-specific special moves.
The main single-player mode sends the selected warrior through a sequence of increasingly difficult opponents before a final confrontation. Versus play allows two players to fight each other, while practice options can be used to learn attacks and movement. Winning matches advances the arcade route, but the game does not use a large equipment or character-progression system.
Plan your run
Learn the range and recovery time of each character's basic attacks before relying on special moves. Staying near the edge of an arena can make sidestepping and punishment easier, but careless movement may also leave you open to throws.
Against computer opponents, block patiently and counter after a missed heavy attack. Use throws when an opponent remains close to your guard, and save aggressive special-move attempts for situations where their start-up can be protected by distance or timing.

Editorial context
A distinctive Midway fighter with memorable mythological characters, though its combat and presentation feel less refined than many of its contemporaries.
War Gods is a 3D fighting game developed and published by Midway Games for the Nintendo 64 in 1997. It presents a mythological roster of warriors who battle for divine power in enclosed arenas. Matches emphasize one-on-one combat, special attacks, throws, and the ability to move around the arena rather than remaining on a flat two-dimensional plane. The game was adapted from Midway's arcade release and includes a single-player arcade path, versus matches, and practice-oriented play. Its digitized visual style and violent presentation reflect Midway's fighting-game design of the period. Reception was mixed: reviewers recognized the accessible combat and distinctive characters, but criticized the dated graphics, uneven balance, and limited depth compared with contemporary competitors.
