How it plays
The game uses a side-scrolling perspective. Each course is a compact stage in a storybook page, and the player chooses one of several available courses before starting. The main objective is to fill the happiness meter by eating fruit, while reaching the goal and avoiding hazards.
Yoshi can walk, jump, flutter after jumping, swallow enemies with his tongue, lay eggs, throw eggs, and perform ground pounds. Courses contain fruit, enemies, clouds, switches, melons, and optional paths. Completing pages and finding special objects opens more of the story, while high scores come from efficient fruit chains and collecting melons.
Plan your run
Prioritize fruit chains rather than eating fruit randomly. Eating the same fruit repeatedly increases its value, while melons provide especially high scores.
Explore before reaching the goal. Look for hidden clouds, switches, doors, and alternate routes, but keep enough health and time to finish the course. Learn the fruit order and enemy positions on later attempts to improve both survival and score.

Yoshi's Story is a side-scrolling platform game developed by Nintendo EAD and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64. The Yoshis live on a pop-up storybook island until Baby Bowser turns their world into a flat picture book and steals the Super Happy Tree. Players guide colorful Yoshis through short, replayable courses, eating fruit and enemies to restore happiness. Its storybook presentation, bright clay-like visuals, and cheerful music distinguish it from earlier Yoshi games. The game was generally well received for its visual style, accessible controls, and inventive level design, although some reviewers found the main adventure brief and the repeated fruit-collection objectives less demanding than traditional platformers.
