How it plays
The game uses a top-down vertical perspective. The aircraft moves freely across the screen while the stage scrolls upward, and the objective is to destroy enemy aircraft, vehicles, installations, and a large boss at the end of each mission.
Players choose from several aircraft with different shot patterns and bomb effects. The main weapon fires continuously or in repeated bursts depending on the aircraft, while bombs clear threats or deal heavy damage. Stages contain branching choices, so a complete run can follow different routes. Destroyed enemies may release power-ups that improve the main weapon, but taking a hit can reduce or remove the current power level.
Plan your run
Learn the timing and entry points of enemies rather than trying to react to every projectile at close range. Keep the aircraft near the center when the screen is crowded, leaving room to move in either direction.
Save bombs for dense bullet patterns, dangerous boss phases, or situations where movement is becoming restricted. Compare aircraft by shot coverage and bomb utility, then use one choice consistently while learning a route. Collect power-ups when the path is safe, but do not risk a life for a marginal upgrade.

Aero Fighters 3 is a 1995 vertical-scrolling shoot 'em up developed and published by Video System. Known in Japan as Sonic Wings 3, it places the player in a selectable combat aircraft and sends them through a succession of heavily armed enemy formations, ground installations, and large bosses. The game is designed for arcade play, with immediate controls, short stages, and a strong emphasis on learning enemy patterns. Its unusual presentation mixes serious aerial combat with colorful pilots, comic dialogue, and exaggerated superweapons. Multiple aircraft provide different firing styles and bomb behavior, while branching routes add some variation between attempts. Reception has generally recognized its responsive action and distinctive style, although the high difficulty and rapid projectile patterns can be demanding for newcomers.
