The Empress
A prominent regal character with a strong visual identity and distinctive battle presence.
How it plays
The playfield contains columns of colored pieces descending from above. The player moves horizontally beneath them, catches pieces of a selected color, and releases them upward to connect with pieces of the same color. Matching groups disappear and can trigger chained clears.
The main objective is to prevent the stack from reaching the character while clearing the field efficiently. Arcade play includes a solo progression against computer-controlled opponents and versus matches, with pressure increasing as pieces rise and garbage is sent to the opposing side.
Plan your run
Prioritize matches that remove large connected groups, but avoid clearing every visible piece immediately if a setup can produce a longer chain. Keep the character moving so the next grab is not blocked by an awkward column.
In versus play, build chains rather than relying on isolated matches. Watch the opponent's field, preserve useful colors, and respond quickly when the rising stack leaves little room for repositioning.
Meet the cast
A prominent regal character with a strong visual identity and distinctive battle presence.
A magic-themed fighter who fits the game's fantasy tone and varied cast.
A playful trickster character that adds personality to the roster.
A fast, agile-looking character associated with quick decision-making and pace.
A grim, supernatural figure that reinforces the game's fantasy atmosphere.
Before you begin
Use the pause between a grab and a throw to plan the next color.
Large chains are more valuable than repeated single clears.
In versus play, monitor both fields instead of focusing only on your own stack.
Magical Drop II is an arcade puzzle game developed and published by Data East in 1996. It is the second main entry in the Magical Drop series and combines falling-object matching with direct character control. The player moves a fortune-themed character below a vertical field, grabs colored pieces, and throws them back upward to create matches and chain reactions. Its quick rounds, escalating speed, and competitive versus play made it a distinctive arcade puzzler, while the colorful presentation and aggressive pacing earned it a lasting following among Japanese arcade and Neo Geo puzzle-game fans.
