Arcade systems refer to the dedicated hardware platforms used in coin-operated amusement machines. Unlike home consoles, arcade boards were often designed for a single cabinet or a small family of compatible cabinets, prioritizing low latency, vivid display output, robust controls, and gameplay tuned for short, repeatable sessions.

Over the decades, arcade hardware ranged from custom discrete logic and sprite-based boards to powerful 3D systems based on proprietary or widely known CPUs and GPUs. Arcade platforms helped define action, fighting, shooting, rhythm, and racing genres, and many influential arcade titles later shaped home gaming design and competitive esports culture.
