How it plays
The game uses a side-view perspective and a sequence of combat stages. Players move horizontally through each stage, defeat waves of enemies, rescue captives, and advance toward Death Adder.
Attacks include standard strikes, jumping attacks, and a character-specific magic spell. Blue magic potions are dropped by small thieves and charge the spell meter. Players can also mount certain creatures, which provide different attack patterns. A two-player mode supports cooperative progress.
Plan your run
Stay near the center of the screen so you can react to enemies approaching from either side. Use short attack sequences, then reposition rather than repeatedly pressing Attack in place.
Save magic for dense groups or difficult bosses. Collect every blue potion that is safe to reach, and use mounted creatures to control crowds. In two-player games, attack enemies from opposite sides without crossing into each other's hit range.

Golden Axe is a 1989 side-scrolling fantasy beat 'em up developed and published by Sega for arcades. Players choose one of three warriors and fight through a barbarian world ruled by the tyrant Death Adder. The game combines close-range combat, mounted creatures, and screen-clearing magic in a compact arcade format. Its three playable heroes give the basic campaign different reach, speed, and spell strength. Golden Axe was well received for its colorful presentation, memorable fantasy setting, and cooperative two-player action, and it became one of Sega's best-known arcade titles.
