How it plays
Simon progresses through Dracula's castle in six blocks, each divided into three stages. The view scrolls horizontally through rooms containing platforms, stairs, candles, traps, enemies, and a boss encounter at the end of each block.
Press B to swing the whip and A to jump. Hearts collected from candles provide ammunition for secondary weapons such as the dagger, axe, holy water, boomerang, and stopwatch. Whip upgrades extend Simon's attack range, while damage, pits, stage timers, and limited lives control the pace of progression.
Plan your run
Learn the fixed movement patterns of bats, medusa heads, axe knights, and other enemies instead of rushing through every room. Upgrade the whip early, then preserve hearts for a secondary weapon that matches the next boss.
Use stairs and short jumps carefully: Simon's midair movement is limited, and knockback can send him into pits. Against bosses, attack during safe openings and prioritize survival over collecting every candle item.
Meet the cast
The playable Belmont vampire hunter who enters Dracula's castle with his whip.
The final antagonist and ruler of the castle, fought after Simon defeats the preceding bosses.
Before you begin
Whip candles to collect hearts and power-ups before moving into the next screen.
Avoid wasting hearts on the stopwatch unless its temporary freeze is immediately useful.
The axe is effective against several elevated or airborne targets, but its arc requires close positioning.
Akumajou Dracula is Konami's 1986 Famicom Disk System action-platformer and the Japanese original of Castlevania. The player controls Simon Belmont, a vampire hunter entering Dracula's castle to stop the count's resurrection. Its six-block structure combines side-scrolling rooms, fixed enemy patterns, platforming hazards, and deliberate whip combat. Simon can strengthen his whip and carry one secondary weapon at a time, making item management important throughout the castle. The game was well received for bringing the series' gothic presentation and demanding arcade-influenced action to a home console. This Rev 2 FDS release is a later revision of the Japanese disk version.
