About Family Computer Disk System

The Family Computer Disk System (FDS) was a Japan-exclusive add-on for Nintendo’s Family Computer that used the proprietary Disk Card format instead of ROM cartridges. It connected through the Famicom expansion port and added features such as rewritable storage, a built-in RAM adapter, and the ability to save game progress directly to disk in many titles.

Its lower media cost helped enable ambitious software and a wave of experimental releases, including several landmark Nintendo games and third-party titles that were not practical on standard cartridges at the time. Though its lifespan was relatively short, the FDS left a major mark on Japanese gaming history and on the evolution of save-capable console software.
