How it plays
Alpha Mission is viewed from above in a vertically scrolling playfield. The objective is to move upward through enemy-filled stages, destroy ground and aerial targets, avoid projectiles, and defeat stage bosses.
The fighter fires continuously through player input and can collect different weapon or armor items. Armor consumes a limited stock or energy supply, so choosing when to activate it is important. Progression follows a fixed arcade stage structure, with failure returning the player to the start or a checkpoint according to the cabinet settings.
Plan your run
Prioritize threats that can restrict movement, especially enemies positioned near the center of the screen. Keep the craft moving, but avoid sweeping into new areas faster than you can read incoming fire.
Treat armor as a resource rather than a permanent shield. Save suitable armor for dense projectile patterns, difficult enemy groups, or boss encounters, and learn which weapon types best fit each stage.

Before you begin
Learn item effects before spending armor, because defensive resources are limited.
Stay near a safe side of the screen when the playfield becomes crowded, while leaving enough room to dodge.

Alpha Mission is a vertically scrolling science-fiction shoot 'em up developed and published by SNK for arcade systems in 1985. The player pilots a combat craft through hostile planetary zones, destroying enemy formations and large mechanical defenses. Its central feature is the ability to collect and activate armor equipment, adding a defensive resource-management layer to conventional shooting. The game combines fixed-stage arcade action with weapon selection and repeated attempts to improve survival. Contemporary and later arcade audiences generally recognized it for its armor mechanic and demanding difficulty, while its presentation remained typical of mid-1980s SNK shooters. It is also known in Japan as ASO: Armored Scrum Object and serves as the first game in the Alpha Mission series.
