Astyanax
A young warrior chosen to rescue Princess Rose. He fights with a sword and can use magic.
How it plays
The game is viewed from the side. Astyanax advances through linear stages, defeating enemies, avoiding hazards, and reaching a boss at the end of each area.
Players use a sword for close combat, jump across platforms, collect power-ups, and use magic when the required resource is available. Weapon strength can improve during a run, but the game remains structured around limited lives, stage completion, and memorizing enemy patterns.
Plan your run
Learn the timing and reach of the sword before attempting to rush through stages. Keep enemies at the edge of attack range, and avoid jumping into groups when a grounded strike is safer.
Save magic for difficult enemy formations or bosses rather than spending it on isolated foes. Watch for recurring attack patterns, use safe platforms to reset the situation, and treat each life as an opportunity to learn the next section.

Astyanax is a 1989 arcade action platformer developed and published by Jaleco. It follows a young warrior summoned to rescue Princess Rose from the demon Blackhorn, traveling through a succession of haunted forests, castles, and other fantasy locations. The game combines side-scrolling exploration with close-range combat, jumping, magic, and boss battles. Its large character sprites and colorful fantasy presentation were notable for the period, while the generally direct stage design made it approachable for arcade play. Difficulty rises steadily through enemy groups, hazards, and demanding bosses, giving the game a distinctly traditional coin-operated challenge.
