How it plays
The game uses a side-on perspective with stages that scroll horizontally and occasionally branch into different routes. The objective is to defeat groups of enemies, avoid hazards, and reach each stage boss.
Players move, jump, attack, grab enemies, use weapons, and spend a special meter for stronger techniques. The main campaign supports one or two players, and progression follows a sequence of urban, industrial, and underground locations. Certain events and routes can affect the ending.
Plan your run
Use throws to interrupt crowded enemy groups, then reposition before more enemies surround you. Save the special meter for bosses or situations where a weapon is unavailable.

The game is substantially more demanding than Bare Knuckle II, so conservative movement is often safer than constant attacking.
Editorial context
A deep and technically ambitious Genesis beat 'em up with excellent combat variety, but its difficulty and pacing can feel punishing.
Bare Knuckle III is a side-scrolling beat 'em up developed by Sega AM2 and published by Sega for the Sega Genesis in 1994. It follows Axel Stone, Blaze Fielding, and their allies as they confront a new plan by the criminal syndicate to create chaos and seize control of the city. Players fight through urban stages using punches, throws, weapons, special attacks, and cooperative tactics. The game is known for its faster pace, expanded combat system, branching routes, and darker science-fiction storyline. Its Japanese release was praised for technical ambition and depth, while the Western Streets of Rage 3 version received a more mixed historical reception because of its high difficulty and substantial changes.
