How it plays
The game uses a side-view perspective. Batman advances through sequential urban stages, defeats gangs and bosses, and reaches an endpoint rather than exploring an open map.
Players move, jump, attack, and use available combat tools while managing enemy groups and hazards. Progression is stage-based, with tougher opponents and boss encounters appearing as the adventure approaches its conclusion.
Plan your run
Keep moving and avoid being surrounded; enemies are most dangerous when they attack from both sides.
Learn boss patterns, use the edges of the screen to control enemy spacing, and save health-restoring opportunities for difficult encounters rather than routine groups.
Meet the cast

Use repeated practice to learn boss timing and stage hazards.
Batman Returns is a side-scrolling action beat 'em up developed and published by Konami for the Sega Genesis in 1992. Based on the film of the same name, it follows Batman as he confronts the Penguin, Catwoman, and the Red Triangle Circus Gang during a violent Christmas-time crisis in Gotham City. The game emphasizes close-range combat, jumping, and limited weapon use across linear stages. Its dark presentation and faithful film setting were notable, although the Genesis version is distinct from Konami's other Batman Returns adaptations and received a more mixed historical reception than the company's stronger arcade-style releases.
