How it plays
Players move through side-scrolling stages, defeating enemies with punches, kicks, jumps, throws, and character-specific heavy attacks. The objective is to advance through each area, survive hazards, and defeat end-of-stage bosses.
The arcade version supports up to three simultaneous players. Stages alternate between conventional brawling and special sequences such as high-speed obstacle courses. Health and continues are limited by the arcade machine's settings, so progression depends on learning enemy patterns and conserving opportunities to recover.
Plan your run
Learn the timing of enemy attacks before committing to long combos. Keep moving when groups surround you, and use throws or heavy attacks to interrupt dangerous opponents.
Treat obstacle sections as pattern-learning challenges rather than races. In multiplayer, spread out enough to avoid accidental hits while focusing attacks on the same threatening enemy.

Battletoads is a side-scrolling beat 'em up developed by Rare and published by Electronic Arts for arcade systems in 1994. It stars the mutant toads Rash, Zitz, and Pimple, who fight through hostile stages to rescue their friends and oppose the Dark Queen. The game combines close-range combat with exaggerated attacks, environmental hazards, and fast-moving obstacle sections. Its three-player support gives the arcade version a stronger cooperative focus than the original home release. Reception praised its energetic presentation and variety, while its demanding difficulty remained a frequent criticism.
