How it plays
The game uses a side-scrolling perspective. Players advance through a sequence of stages, defeating enemies, avoiding hazards, and reaching the end of each area. Combat uses punches, kicks, jumping attacks, and environmental objects, with stronger finishing animations available after building momentum.
Stage structure changes frequently. Alongside standard brawling, the game includes platforming, high-speed descent and racing sections, rope and climbing challenges, and other timing-focused sequences. Progress depends on learning enemy patterns, controlling movement precisely, and preserving lives and continues for the later stages.
Plan your run
Learn each stage as a separate challenge rather than relying only on combat skill. In brawling sections, keep enemies grouped where possible, use screen edges carefully, and prioritize opponents that can interrupt attacks or attack from range.
Treat the obstacle and vehicle stages as memorization tests. Slow down before unfamiliar jumps, watch the upcoming hazards, and avoid using continues casually. Saving lives for the later stages is especially important because checkpoints and recovery opportunities are limited.

Before you begin

Keep track of lives and continues because later stages are substantially less forgiving.
Battletoads is a side-scrolling beat 'em up developed by Rare and published by Tradewest for the Sega Genesis in 1993. Players control one of three anthropomorphic toads on a rescue mission against the Dark Queen and her forces. The game mixes close-range combat with platforming, obstacle courses, racing sequences, and other deliberately demanding set pieces. Its exaggerated attacks and cartoon presentation gave it a distinctive identity, while its sharp difficulty became one of its defining traits. The Genesis version was regarded as a strong home conversion, although the original game's punishing later stages continued to divide players. It is remembered as an ambitious, technically impressive action game with a memorable soundtrack and unusually varied level design.
