Charlie
The playable ninja protagonist who infiltrates enemy fortresses and fights through hostile forces.
How it plays
The game uses a side-scrolling perspective. The player guides Charlie from left to right through themed stages, defeating enemies, avoiding traps, and reaching a boss encounter at the end of each area.
Charlie can move, jump, attack, and use weapons or items found during a stage. Progression is stage-based rather than character-driven; success depends on learning enemy patterns, managing positioning, and preserving lives through increasingly difficult encounters.
Plan your run
Stay near the center of the screen when possible so approaching enemies can be seen early. Use jumps to cross hazards rather than rushing into unfamiliar areas.
Save powerful weapons for dense enemy groups or bosses, and attack from a safe distance whenever the current weapon allows it. Learn boss patterns after each attempt instead of spending lives on repeated close-range attacks.
Meet the cast
The playable ninja protagonist who infiltrates enemy fortresses and fights through hostile forces.
Before you begin
Watch for hidden or easily missed item containers during each stage.
Avoid jumping blindly near pits and moving hazards.
Use temporary weapons before they expire rather than carrying them into danger.
Charlie Ninja is a 1995 arcade action game developed and published by Data East. It combines side-scrolling platforming with beat 'em up combat, following a modern ninja through colorful stages filled with enemies, hazards, and oversized bosses. The game is built for short, replayable arcade sessions. Players run, jump, climb, and attack while collecting temporary weapons and power-ups. Its exaggerated comic-book presentation and unusual enemy designs give it a distinctive tone, although its demanding difficulty and somewhat chaotic action limit its appeal for some players. It remains a notable late-era Data East arcade release.
