How it plays
The game uses a forward-facing, behind-the-hero perspective. The player advances through linear stages, defeats groups of enemies, and confronts larger encounters and bosses while protecting a shrinking life bar.
Sword attacks must be directed toward approaching enemies, while the shield helps absorb or deflect incoming blows. Enemies telegraph attacks, making positioning and timing important. Progression includes rewards and equipment improvements that increase the hero’s effectiveness as the journey continues.
Crossed Swords is primarily a single-player arcade experience, with cooperative play available in compatible versions.
Plan your run
Watch enemy attack animations and defend before committing to a sword strike. Attacking repeatedly without regard for distance often leaves the knight open to counterattacks.
Meet the cast

A second warrior who joins the quest in two-player mode.
Before you begin
Defensive timing is more important than rapid attacks.
Approach one enemy at a time when the stage layout allows it.
Cooperative play can make crowded encounters easier in supported arcade setups.
Crossed Swords is a fantasy action game developed by Alpha Denshi Co., Ltd., later known as ADK, and published by SNK for the Neo Geo arcade platform. It presents a knight’s journey through a hostile medieval kingdom in a behind-the-character combat view. Players fight monsters and enemy soldiers with timed sword attacks, defensive maneuvers, and limited magic. The game combines arcade immediacy with light action-RPG progression, including improved equipment and abilities. Its distinctive perspective and deliberate combat made it a notable early Neo Geo title, although its difficulty and repetition gave it a more specialized reception than SNK’s faster arcade games. Its design is best suited to players who enjoy methodical combat rather than rapid button mashing.
