Cooperative play requires additional player controls on the cabinet.
How it plays
The game uses an overhead, angled perspective rather than a conventional horizontal beat 'em up view. Players move through connected rooms and outdoor areas, defeat monsters, collect treasure, and search for the route to each stage's boss.
A joystick controls movement, while the attack and magic buttons handle the main combat options. Characters can improve their effectiveness by finding equipment and other items. The arcade version supports cooperative play, allowing multiple players to advance through the same fantasy adventure.
Plan your run
Stay near the edge of enemy groups so that attacks cannot surround the character. Clear ordinary enemies before opening treasure or moving into narrow passages.
Save magic for dense groups and bosses, and learn the timing of each boss's attack pattern. In multiplayer, divide attention between different approaches instead of clustering in one corner.

Dark Seal is a 1990 fantasy action game developed and published by Data East for arcades. It combines side-scrolling beat 'em up combat with overhead exploration, dungeon hazards, and light role-playing elements. Players guide a chosen warrior through a quest to defeat hostile creatures and the forces threatening the kingdom. Combat centers on close-range attacks, magic, item collection, and careful movement through trap-filled stages. Its distinctive fantasy setting and four-player cabinet support helped it stand out among contemporary arcade action games, although its difficulty and relatively conventional combat limited its broader reception. The game was released internationally under the title Gate of Doom.
