How it plays

How does DoDonPachi play?

The game uses a vertical viewpoint. Move the fighter through scrolling stages, destroy enemies, collect power items, and defeat a boss at the end of each stage. The player can fire a rapid shot or hold the shot button to use a narrower, stronger laser.

Destroying enemies continuously builds a chain, while missed targets or excessive delays break it. Bombs clear bullets and damage enemies, but stock is limited. Three fighter types provide different shot spreads and laser characteristics, and the arcade campaign becomes more demanding through later stages and repeated play for higher scores.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play DoDonPachi?

Learn enemy entrances and boss patterns instead of reacting only to individual bullets. Stay near the center when possible, where movement options are greatest, and use short controlled movements during dense attacks.

Protect the chain by destroying targets promptly, but do not take unnecessary risks for a marginal score gain. Save bombs for situations that threaten a life or a valuable chain, and practice each stage until its dangerous transitions become predictable.

Before you begin

What should you know before playing?

  1. 1

Use the laser against large enemies and bosses, but switch to the shot when broad coverage is more useful.

  2. 2

Do not spend every bomb immediately; reserve at least one for an unexpected pattern or recovery.

  3. 3

Watch enemy entrances to prepare for aimed fire before it reaches the play area.
