How it plays

How does Donkey Kong Country play?

Players guide Donkey Kong or Diddy Kong through side-scrolling stages filled with platforms, enemies, pits, barrels, collectibles, and secret entrances. Donkey Kong is stronger, while Diddy Kong is faster and more agile; losing the active Kong brings the other into play if available.

The world map is divided into themed areas with regular stages, mine-cart and water levels, boss encounters, and bonus rooms. Letters spelling KONG, banana bunches, animal tokens, and hidden rooms reward exploration. Completing stages opens the route forward, while saved progress allows the adventure to be resumed later.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Donkey Kong Country?

Learn when to use each Kong: Donkey Kong can defeat stronger enemies, while Diddy Kong is generally better for rapid movement and difficult jumps. Preserve both characters by avoiding unnecessary risks and using barrels carefully.

Explore beyond the obvious route. Collecting three matching animal tokens opens a bonus stage, and finding hidden rooms can provide extra lives, collectibles, and shortcuts. In mine-cart stages, prioritize rhythm and memorization over speed.
