How it plays

How does Dragon Quest VI: The Land of Illusion play?

The player explores an overhead world map, towns, caves, towers, and other dungeons. Battles use a first-person command interface, with party members selecting attacks, spells, items, defense, or special abilities before enemies act.

The party gains experience and gold from battles, equips weapons and armor, and can change vocations at Alltrades Abbey. Vocations grant abilities and influence character development. Progression depends on story events, exploration, key items, transportation upgrades, and movement between the two principal worlds.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Dragon Quest VI: The Land of Illusion?

Build a balanced party with physical attackers, healing, and offensive magic. Do not ignore vocations: mastering early classes unlocks stronger abilities and useful hybrid options.

Explore both worlds carefully, revisit towns after major story events, and keep several save files before major decisions. Equipment upgrades and resistance to status effects are often more important than raw attack power.
