How it plays
The game uses a side-scrolling perspective. Players advance from left to right, defeating groups of infantry and enemy officers while surviving attacks from multiple directions.
A stage is divided into combat sections and culminates in a boss battle. The player attacks, jumps, moves around the battlefield, and uses the available mounted combat system to maintain momentum. Progression is stage-based rather than experience-driven, with success depending on lives, continues, positioning, and effective attacks.
Plan your run
Stay near the center of the screen so approaching enemies can be seen before they surround you. Prioritize enemy officers and ranged attackers, then clear ordinary soldiers.
Use jumping and movement to avoid being trapped between groups. Preserve lives for boss sections, learn each officer's attack rhythm, and use mounted attacks when they let you pass through a crowded formation safely.

Dynasty Wars is a side-scrolling historical beat 'em up developed and published by Capcom for arcades in 1989. Loosely based on Romance of the Three Kingdoms, it follows Shu Han warriors fighting through armies during the era of the Three Kingdoms. Players choose a famous warrior and battle across stages filled with soldiers, officers, and large boss encounters. The game combines direct melee attacks with mounted movement and a fast, arcade-focused pace. Its colorful sprites, recognizable historical figures, and polished combat helped establish Capcom's Three Kingdoms arcade line, although the later Warriors of Fate is generally the better-known entry in the series.
