How it plays
The game uses a side-view perspective. Jim runs, jumps, crouches, fires his blaster, and swings his head as a whip to defeat enemies or reach distant objects. Each stage has its own hazards and visual theme, with objectives ranging from reaching the exit to surviving vehicle-based sequences.
Progression is stage-based, with boss fights and specialized challenges breaking up the standard platforming. Jim’s suit provides protection, while collecting power-ups improves his weapon or restores health. Some sections require careful timing, exploration, and use of the whip rather than constant shooting.
Plan your run
Learn the rhythm of each stage before rushing forward. Use Jim’s whip to attack from a safer distance, grab hooks, and interact with objects, while reserving blaster ammunition for enemies that are difficult to approach.

Before you begin

Several stages change their rules significantly; adjust your approach instead of relying only on shooting.
Earthworm Jim is a side-scrolling action platformer developed by Shiny Entertainment and published by Playmates Interactive Entertainment for the Sega Genesis in 1994. It follows Jim, an ordinary earthworm who becomes a heavily armed hero after finding a powerful cybernetic suit. The game combines traditional platforming with run-and-gun combat, whip attacks, unusual vehicles, and surreal comic set pieces. Its stages are deliberately varied, shifting between conventional obstacle courses, shooting sections, races, and boss encounters. Critics and players praised its detailed animation, eccentric humor, inventive level design, and technical presentation, establishing it as one of the Genesis era’s most distinctive platform games.
