How it plays

How does Final Fantasy VI play?

The player explores an overhead world map, towns, caves, ruins, and other story locations. Battles are random and use an Active Time Battle system: party members select commands while gauges fill at different speeds.

Characters can attack, defend, use items, cast spells, and perform individual commands such as Tools, Blitz, Lore, or Runic. Espers teach magic and provide stat bonuses, while equipment and party composition determine each character's role. The story is divided into distinct sections with changing objectives and optional content.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Final Fantasy VI?

Build parties around complementary commands rather than relying on one damage type. Keep healing and revival options available, and equip status protection when a dungeon or boss repeatedly uses disabling effects.

Teach useful spells through Espers and review new equipment in every town. Save often before major story events, explore optional paths after the world changes, and remember that several late-game objectives can be completed in different orders.
