The hack uses the SNES controller layout of the underlying Final Fantasy III (USA) release.
Battle commands are selected from the menu; exact available commands depend on the active character.
How it plays
The game uses a top-down exploration view for towns, caves, forests, airships, and the world map. Players recruit and organize characters, speak with residents, buy equipment, solve environmental events, and enter turn-based battles against monsters and bosses.
Combat uses the Active Time Battle system. Each character can attack, use items, cast learned magic, or select a personal command such as Blitz, Tools, Runic, Bushido, or Rage. The adventure progresses through the World of Balance and World of Ruin, with a mostly linear opening followed by a more open search for allies and objectives.
Plan your run
Treat the Hard Type revision as a separate balance target: do not assume that standard Final Fantasy III (USA) enemy damage, HP, or boss patterns remain unchanged.
Build parties around each character’s command. Use Edgar’s Tools when targets are vulnerable to mechanical damage, enter Sabin’s Blitz inputs carefully, and keep healing items available when the party is split. In the World of Ruin, recruit optional allies and revisit towns before confronting the final area, because the open structure allows substantial preparation.
Meet the cast
A young woman with an unusual connection to magic and espers; her identity and powers are central to the opening chapters.
A treasure hunter and member of the Returners who specializes in opening locks and protecting people important to him.
King of Figaro and a gadget user whose Tools command provides mechanical weapons in battle.
Edgar’s martial-artist brother, who uses Blitz techniques entered through directional button commands.
A former imperial general and magicite user whose loyalty and resistance to the Empire drive major story events.
A mercenary accompanied by the dog Interceptor; his Throw command uses weapons as consumable projectiles.
The Empire’s unstable clown-like antagonist, whose actions shape the game’s transition into the World of Ruin.
Before you begin
Keep multiple save files before major events, party splits, and the World of Ruin’s optional recruitment routes.
Equip relics according to the character’s command and role instead of giving every physical attacker the same setup.
Because this is a Hard Type hack, test enemy encounters cautiously and conserve restorative items in unfamiliar areas.
Final Fantasy III (USA) [Hack by JCE3000GT v1.2] (Hard Type) is an independently modified Super Nintendo version of Square’s Final Fantasy III, the North American localization of Final Fantasy VI. Its underlying game is a story-driven Japanese role-playing game built around a large party, turn-based battles, exploration, and a fantasy conflict involving the Empire, the Returners, and the mysterious esper Terra. The Hard Type label identifies this as a difficulty-focused ROM hack rather than the standard release, but reliable public documentation for every revision-specific change is limited. The original game was widely praised for its ensemble cast, cinematic set pieces, expressive soundtrack, and World of Ruin structure. Because the hack’s author and publisher details are not verified here, those fields remain unspecified.
