How it plays

How does Final Fantasy VI play?

The player explores an overhead world map, towns, caves, towers, and other dungeons. Random encounters lead to turn-based battles in which party members attack, defend, use items, cast magic, or activate personal commands. Active Time Battle controls the pace of command selection.

The story is divided into major narrative sections, with party composition changing as characters join or leave. Espers provide magic, stat-growth bonuses, and summon abilities. Airships and other vehicles expand exploration, while equipment, levels, spells, and special techniques support progression.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Final Fantasy VI?

Build balanced parties around each character's strengths, but do not neglect equipment upgrades. Give Espers to characters who will remain in the active roster long enough to benefit from their spell-learning rates and stat bonuses.

Save frequently before major dungeons and story events. Experiment with Blitz, Tools, Rages, Bushido, Runic, and other character commands; several encounters become much easier when abilities are matched to enemy weaknesses.
