How it plays
Gauntlet uses an overhead perspective. Players explore connected maze rooms, collect keys to open locked passages, gather treasure for points, and reach the exit while avoiding hazards and enemy attacks.
The four heroes have different strengths. Warriors excel in close combat, Valkyries balance attack and defense, Wizards use powerful magic, and Elves move quickly and shoot effectively. Health decreases over time and through damage; food restores health, while magic potions trigger a powerful screen-clearing attack. Levels continue in a fixed arcade progression, with monster generators producing enemies until they are destroyed or ignored.
Plan your run
Keep moving through open routes and avoid letting enemies surround the party. Destroy monster generators when practical, but do not spend health chasing every enemy.
Collect food before health becomes critical, and coordinate keys among players. Save magic potions for dense crowds, dangerous intersections, or moments when a teammate is trapped. Watch the screen edges, where enemies can enter unexpectedly.

Before you begin

Prioritize food and keys when resources are scarce.

Gauntlet is a 1985 fantasy action arcade game developed and published by Atari Games. It places up to four players in control of distinct heroes—Thor the Warrior, Thyra the Valkyrie, Merlin the Wizard, or Questor the Elf—as they fight through maze-like dungeons. The game combines overhead exploration, real-time combat, resource management, and cooperative play rather than relying on a traditional score-only arcade format. Players search for keys, food, treasure, and escape routes while battling monsters and managing health. Its four-player cabinet, readable classes, and relentless enemy swarms made it a notable social arcade experience. Contemporary and later reception generally praised its cooperative design and scale, although the repetitive combat and demanding resource economy could be punishing.
