How it plays
Arthur advances through horizontally scrolling stages filled with platforms, ladders, hazards, and enemies. The joystick controls movement and climbing, while the attack button throws the equipped weapon and the jump button performs a fixed jump. Arthur can carry one weapon at a time, including weapons with different speeds, ranges, or trajectories.
Taking damage removes Arthur's armor and leaves him in his undergarments; another hit costs a life. Stages end with boss battles, and completing the full journey leads to a second playthrough before the true ending can be obtained. Weapon selection and positioning are central to progression.
Plan your run
Learn enemy spawn points and avoid rushing into unfamiliar screens. Use platforms and ladders to control the pace of encounters, and attack enemies before they reach Arthur's position.
Protect Arthur's armor whenever possible. Choose weapons for the stage rather than relying on one favorite, and remember that the second journey requires careful weapon management for the final progression.

Ghouls'n Ghosts is a side-scrolling action platformer developed and published by Capcom for arcade systems in 1988. It follows the knight Arthur as he battles undead creatures, demons, and other monsters to rescue Princess Prin Prin. The game combines fixed-stage platforming with rapid projectile combat, demanding careful movement and precise timing rather than continuous attacks alone. Its elaborate sprite work, branching weapon options, and punishing difficulty made it a prominent arcade sequel. Ghouls'n Ghosts was widely recognized for refining the formula of Ghosts 'n Goblins while preserving its severe challenge. Like its predecessor, it expects repeated attempts, memorization, and mastery of enemy patterns.
