How it plays
Arthur advances through a series of side-scrolling stages filled with platforms, ladders, hazards, flying enemies, armored foes, and bosses. He can walk, crouch, jump, climb, and throw weapons horizontally or diagonally. Losing armor leaves him in his underwear; taking another hit costs a life.
The game uses limited lives and continues, while weapon pickups change Arthur's attack style. Gold armor enables more powerful magic, and progression ultimately requires completing the adventure again with the correct weapon for the final confrontation. Enemy patterns and stage layouts make memorization important.
Plan your run
Treat every jump as a commitment: pause to identify enemy patterns before moving. Keep armor whenever possible, and use platforms and ladders to control the pace of encounters.
Learn which weapon suits each area, save Gold Armor for difficult sections, and avoid wasting magic on ordinary enemies. The second loop is substantially harder and requires the Bracelet for the final battle, so preserve lives and practice the required route.

Ghouls'n Ghosts is a side-scrolling action platformer developed by Capcom and released for the Sega Genesis in 1990. It follows the knight Arthur as he battles through haunted forests, castles, and other dangerous realms to rescue Princess Prin Prin from demonic forces. The game combines deliberate platforming with rapid projectile combat, demanding careful timing and repeated attempts. Its Genesis version is a substantial home adaptation of the arcade game, with colorful graphics, demanding stages, and a famously unforgiving difficulty curve. Critics and players have historically praised its atmosphere, enemy variety, and tight controls while also recognizing its steep challenge and strict progression requirements.
