How it plays

How does Golden Axe II play?

Players move from left to right through a series of side-scrolling stages while defeating waves of enemies. The three selectable heroes emphasize different combinations of speed, attack power, reach, and magic strength.

Players can walk, jump, attack, use character-specific magic, and pick up magic books dropped by enemies. Stages end with stronger enemy encounters or bosses, and progress is based on clearing the fixed sequence of levels rather than building a persistent character.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Golden Axe II?

Stay near the center of the screen so advancing enemies cannot easily surround you. Use attacks to control groups, then jump away when several foes close in.

Save magic books for crowded encounters and bosses. Match the hero to your preferred style: Tyris Flare is effective when magic is important, while Gilius Thunderhead rewards close-range aggression.

Meet the cast

Who are the key characters?

1

Ax Battler

A human swordsman with balanced attack power, speed, and magic.

2

Tyris Flare

An Amazon warrior who is quick and has the strongest magic.

3

Gilius Thunderhead

A dwarf warrior with powerful attacks and weaker magic.

4

Dark Guld

The principal villain whose forces threaten the land.

Before you begin

What should you know before playing?

  1. 1

Collect magic books even when your magic meter is nearly full; denying them to the stage flow can make later encounters safer.

  2. 2

Use jump attacks to approach enemies and avoid standing directly between multiple opponents.
