How it plays

How does Golden Axe II play?

The game uses a side-scrolling perspective across seven combat stages. Players move through each area, defeat waves of enemies, and face stronger encounters and bosses as the campaign progresses.

Ax Battler, Tyris Flare, and Gilius Thunderhead have different weapons, attack patterns, and magic strengths. Players can walk, jump, attack, and collect magic books dropped by small thieves. Magic is activated when enough books have been gathered, and the game supports one-player or cooperative two-player play.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Golden Axe II?

Control the center of the screen and avoid being surrounded, especially when multiple enemies approach from opposite directions.

Save magic books for dense enemy groups or bosses. Use jumping attacks to create space, then return to grounded attacks when enemies are clustered.

In two-player mode, coordinate attacks instead of striking through the same target; one player can draw attention while the other uses magic or attacks from the side.

Meet the cast

Who are the key characters?

1

Ax Battler

A balanced swordsman who combines dependable physical attacks with earth-based magic.

2

Tyris Flare

A fast warrior whose weapon range and powerful fire magic emphasize offense.

3

Gilius Thunderhead

A heavily armed dwarf with strong attacks and lightning-based magic.

Before you begin

What should you know before playing?

  1. 1

Collect magic books even when the magic gauge is not full; unused books carry toward the next spell.

  2. 2

Use the edge of the screen carefully, since enemies can trap a character against it.

  3. 3

Gilius is slower but can be effective against crowds when his reach and damage are used deliberately.
