How it plays
The game uses a side-view perspective and scrolls continuously from left to right. The objective is to survive each stage, destroy enemies and terrain targets, and defeat a stage boss before continuing to the next area.
Destroying orange power capsules moves the selection cursor along the power meter. Pressing the power-up button activates the highlighted upgrade, allowing the player to choose missiles, double or laser shots, options, a force field, and other enhancements. Losing a life removes the ship's accumulated equipment, making recovery a central part of progression. The arcade version is a single-player game with alternating support for a second player.
Plan your run
Prioritize power capsules and activate upgrades deliberately rather than advancing the cursor without a plan. Options, missiles, and the laser provide strong offensive coverage, but a force field can be more valuable when entering an unfamiliar boss or hazard section.
When recovering after death, stay conservative and collect nearby capsules before attempting risky attacks. Learn the position of terrain hazards and enemy entrances, because speed, safe positioning, and preserving equipment are usually more important than maximizing destruction.
Meet the cast
The player-controlled spacecraft and the main defender of Gradius.
The alien commander whose forces threaten Gradius and serve as the game's central antagonist.
Before you begin
Use the power meter intentionally; do not activate every highlighted item immediately.
Keep the Vic Viper away from terrain edges and memorize enemy entry points.
After losing a life, rebuild equipment cautiously instead of rushing toward the next capsule.

Gradius II: GOFER's Ambition is a 1988 arcade horizontal-scrolling shoot 'em up developed and published by Konami. Players pilot the Vic Viper through a sequence of hostile space environments while defending the planet Gradius from the threat of the alien commander GOFER. Its play style combines precise movement, rapid shooting, and deliberate management of a selectable power-up bar. The game expands the formula established by the original Gradius with more weapon configurations, varied stage themes, and aggressive enemy patterns. It was well received in arcades for its polished presentation, demanding difficulty, and depth, and it became one of the most respected entries in Konami's classic shooter line.
