How it plays

How does Gradius III play?

Gradius III is viewed from the side and scrolls horizontally through a fixed sequence of stages. The objective is to survive each stage, destroy enemy formations and environmental hazards, and defeat its boss before advancing.

Destroying marked enemies releases power capsules. The player moves the selection cursor along the power meter and activates the highlighted upgrade, choosing between speed, missiles, double or laser fire, options, and a shield. Losing a life removes the currently active power-up equipment, making recovery an important part of progression.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Gradius III?

Collect capsules deliberately rather than activating every upgrade immediately. A useful early priority is enough speed for safe movement, followed by the weapon, missiles, and Options when the stage allows it.

Learn boss patterns and preserve positioning near the center of the screen. Avoid reckless capsule collection after a death, rebuild the loadout from a safe distance, and remember that the arcade game becomes more demanding in its later loop.

Before you begin

What should you know before playing?

  1. 1

Use the power meter strategically; do not activate a dangerous upgrade merely because it is highlighted.

  2. 2

After losing a life, prioritize survival and rebuilding speed before chasing a full weapon setup.
