Joe
A caveman hero and one of the two playable characters.
How it plays
The game uses a side-view perspective and sends Joe or Mac through horizontally scrolling prehistoric stages. The objective is to reach each stage's end, defeat enemies, and overcome a boss.
Players move across platforms, jump over hazards, collect weapons, and attack enemies at close or ranged distance. Different weapons change the attack's reach and behavior. Two players can cooperate, and progression follows a fixed sequence of themed areas with boss encounters.
Plan your run
Use the longest-range weapon available when approaching groups, especially against flying enemies and bosses.
Keep moving through open areas, but slow down near pits and enemies that can attack from above. In two-player mode, coordinate movement so one player does not scroll the screen ahead of the other.
Learn boss attack patterns rather than trading hits. Preserve lives by avoiding unnecessary fights when the route allows safe passage.

Joe & Mac is a side-scrolling action-platformer developed and published by Data East for the Sega Genesis in 1991. It stars two cavemen who leave their village to rescue kidnapped women from a hostile prehistoric tribe. The game combines platforming with beat 'em up combat: players run, jump, climb, and attack dinosaurs, monsters, and enemy tribesmen across a succession of stages. The Genesis version adapts the arcade game for home play and supports solo or two-player cooperative action. Reception recognized its colorful prehistoric setting and straightforward co-op fun, while the repetitive combat and difficulty were seen as less distinctive than the arcade presentation.
