How it plays

How does Karate Champ play?

Matches are shown from a side-on perspective. The player moves a karate fighter around a single-screen arena while trying to score clean hits and avoid the opponent's techniques.

Two joysticks provide movement and attack inputs. Different directions produce distinct karate actions, including strikes, kicks, blocks, and jumps. Bouts are decided by scoring points before time expires; the game then advances through further opponents and interludes.

Bonus stages interrupt the matches with timing-based challenges. Progression is primarily score-based and depends on learning spacing, recognizing attacks, and choosing a suitable technique rather than rapidly repeating one move.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Karate Champ?

Stay at a controllable distance and watch the opponent's posture before committing to an attack. A quick, well-timed technique is safer than repeatedly changing direction.

Use movement to create openings, block when the opponent closes in, and learn which attacks reach at different distances. In bonus events, prioritize timing and observation over hurried inputs.

Before you begin

What should you know before playing?

  1. 1

Learn the relationship between the two joysticks before attempting advanced techniques.

  2. 2

Watch the opponent's distance and stance; many attacks are strongest only at the correct range.

  3. 3

Treat bonus events as timing practice rather than simply chasing maximum speed.
