How it plays
The game uses a side-view perspective. Casey must travel through dangerous stages, defeat enemies, collect power-ups, and reach the goal while managing a limited supply of lives and health. Levels contain platforms, hazards, secret areas, vertical routes, and teleporters that can send the player to different parts of the world.
Masks provide the main progression system. Hero forms such as Maniaxe, Samurai, and Juggernaut grant different attacks or movement abilities, while taking damage can remove a mask before harming Casey directly. The world map branches, so players can often choose among routes and discover alternate stages.
Plan your run
Learn what each mask does before spending it. Keep a useful form for sections that require its attack or movement ability, and avoid unnecessary damage because losing a mask can make later areas much harder.
Explore beyond the obvious route. Hidden blocks, teleporters, bonus items, and branching paths are central to the level design. When a stage seems impassable, check vertical areas and nearby walls rather than assuming the route is closed.

Editorial context
A creative and demanding Genesis platformer whose mask system and sprawling stages reward exploration, though its difficulty can feel unforgiving.
Kid Chameleon is a side-scrolling action platformer developed by Sega Technical Institute and published by Sega for the Sega Genesis in 1992. The game follows Casey, a teenager pulled into a dangerous virtual-reality fighting game after its champion disappears. Casey can collect masks that transform him into specialized forms, changing his attacks, movement, and durability. Its large, branching stages emphasize exploration, hidden routes, and survival rather than a simple race to the exit. The game was noted for its imaginative power-ups, challenging level design, and unusually extensive world, although its difficulty and occasional lack of visual guidance divided players. It remains a distinctive Genesis-era platformer with a strong emphasis on experimentation and replayable stage discovery.
