How it plays
Two fighters face each other in one-on-one matches on a horizontal arena. Players use six attack buttons, directional movement, jumps, blocks, special moves, and throws to deplete the opponent's life bars.
The arcade ladder consists of battles against the game's roster, with Ultratech opponents and a final boss encounter. Combos begin with opening attacks and can be extended through special moves; defenders can interrupt them with correctly timed combo breakers. Winning advances the player through the tournament, while losing generally ends the credit unless another player continues.
Plan your run
Learn one reliable opener, one short combo, and one combo breaker for each matchup. Avoid repeatedly attacking into a blocked opponent; create space, then punish a whiffed move.
Watch the opponent's combo rhythm rather than mashing buttons. Breakers are matchup-sensitive, so identify the attack strength being used and practice the timing. Save your strongest special techniques for confirmed openings instead of throwing them out at random.

Killer Instinct is a 1994 arcade fighting game developed by Rare and published by Midway. It presents a tournament staged by the sinister Ultratech corporation, bringing together martial artists, monsters, cyborgs, and other challengers. Matches use a two-dimensional fighting plane but emphasize long combo strings, combo breakers, special moves, and flashy finishing techniques. Its digitized visuals, CD-quality music, and distinctive presentation helped it stand out in arcades. The game was broadly well received for its accessible controls and aggressive combo system, although its pace and memorization-heavy mechanics could be demanding for newcomers.
