How it plays

How does The King of Fighters '98 play?

Players select a team of three fighters and face opposing teams in rounds of one-on-one combat. A defeated fighter is replaced by the next team member, while the winner retains some remaining vitality.

The Advanced Mode uses a power gauge that can be charged through attacks and movement, while Extra Mode uses a stock-based gauge and a manually activated emergency state. Players use normal attacks, command moves, special techniques, and Desperation Moves to control space and finish rounds. The arcade path progresses through successive teams before a final boss battle.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play The King of Fighters '98?

Build teams with complementary ranges and reliable meter use rather than choosing three characters with the same weaknesses.

  • Learn a safe basic combo for each fighter and confirm it before spending meter.
  • In Advanced Mode, preserve stock for canceling into powerful attacks or surviving pressure.
  • In Extra Mode, manage the manual power-up carefully and avoid activating it when the opponent can punish the recovery.
  • Watch the opponent's jump timing; anti-air attacks and grounded pokes are central to consistent defense.
