Elwin
The protagonist, who becomes a commander while seeking to protect the people caught between the major factions.
How it plays
The game uses a top-down, tile-based battlefield. Each scenario has objectives such as defeating enemy commanders, protecting allies, reaching a location, or surviving an attack.
Commanders recruit and deploy troops, move across terrain, attack nearby enemies, and use magic or support skills. Units fight in commander-led engagements, while class changes, equipment, money, and troop types provide long-term progression.
The campaign includes branching choices and routes. Story decisions can alter allies, battles, and the ending, making multiple playthroughs substantially different.
Plan your run
Use terrain and troop matchups rather than sending commanders forward alone. Keep vulnerable units behind the front line, and use forests, hills, bridges, and defensive positions to limit enemy movement.
Recruit troops that complement each commander’s class, then spend experience and money carefully. Prioritize objectives and protect important allies; some scenarios can change the story route or permanently remove support characters.
Save before major route decisions and class changes. Experimenting with commander classes is valuable because promotion choices affect movement, magic, troop access, and late-game options.

Langrisser II is a fantasy tactical role-playing game developed by NCS, with development associated with Career Soft, and published by Masaya for the Mega Drive/Genesis. It follows Elwin, a young traveler drawn into a conflict involving the sacred sword Langrisser, the demonic Alhazard, and rival human and supernatural factions. Battles are fought on tile-based maps, but commanders lead recruited troops rather than fighting alone. The game is known for branching story routes, extensive class changes, commander-and-unit tactics, and a large scenario campaign. It received strong regard among strategy RPG fans for its strategic depth and replay value, although its original Western availability on Genesis was limited compared with the Japanese release.
