Asterix and the Great Rescue
Sega GenesisPlatformer
How it plays
Stages are viewed from a side-on perspective and contain entrances, exits, traps, gaps, walls, and other hazards. The objective is to save the required number of lemmings before the available population or time runs out.
The player selects a skill and assigns it to a lemming at the right moment. Climbers scale vertical walls, floaters survive long falls, blockers turn others around, and builders, bashers, miners, and diggers reshape the route. Levels become harder through tighter timing, limited skills, multiple routes, and more dangerous terrain.
Plan your run
Study the entire stage before spending skills, especially builders and blockers. A single misplaced assignment can seal the only route or send later lemmings into danger.
Use blockers to hold a group safely while you solve the route ahead, and remember that a blocker can usually be released by digging or blasting nearby terrain. Prioritize the minimum rescue requirement when a perfect result is impractical.
Before you begin
Pause mentally before assigning a skill; the correct target is often several steps ahead.
Reserve builders for places where no natural route exists.
Use the release rate to control spacing and reduce collisions.
Lemmings is a puzzle-strategy game developed by DMA Design and published by Psygnosis for the Sega Genesis. The player must guide a stream of largely helpless lemmings through dangerous stages, assigning individual creatures skills that let them climb, dig, build bridges, block traffic, or change direction. Its real-time play style combines quick observation with careful planning, since mistakes can permanently alter the route. The Genesis version translates the distinctive mouse-oriented concept into controller-based play while retaining the series’ escalating challenge. Lemmings was widely praised for its inventive premise, accessible rules, and surprising depth, and became one of the defining puzzle games of the early 1990s.
