How it plays

How does Madden NFL 96 play?

The game uses an overhead, field-level perspective during plays. The offense selects a formation and play, then controls the quarterback, ball carrier, or receiver while attempting to gain first downs and score touchdowns. Defense centers on selecting a defender, pursuing the ball, and making tackles or coverage plays.

Modes are built around single exhibition games and longer season-oriented competition. Successful play selection, clock management, field position, and personnel usage determine progression through a schedule and into postseason games. The game also includes standard football options such as choosing teams, adjusting lineups, and setting game conditions.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Madden NFL 96?

Use short passes and inside runs to establish a manageable down-and-distance situation before attempting deeper throws. On defense, watch the quarterback and avoid overcommitting a controlled defender, since missed tackles can create large gains.

Manage the clock near halftime and at the end of games. Field position is especially important on the Genesis version, so punting is often safer than forcing a low-percentage fourth-down play.

Before you begin

What should you know before playing?

  1. 1

Learn the playbook before relying on audibles; predictable play selection makes the offense easier to defend.

  2. 2

Use controlled pursuit angles instead of running directly behind the ball carrier.

  3. 3

Save timeouts for the final possessions of each half.
