How it plays

How does MERCS play?

Players move through vertically scrolling battlefields, defeating infantry, armored vehicles, helicopters, and larger bosses. The main objective is to reach the end of each stage while conserving lives, ammunition-related resources, and special attacks.

The standard arsenal includes a rapid-fire weapon, grenades, and collectible weapon upgrades. Some versions include a special mode or temporary transformation that changes the player's offensive power. The arcade game offers a one-player mode and a two-player cooperative mode, with progression through a sequence of combat stages and boss encounters.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play MERCS?

Stay near the center of the screen when possible so threats approaching from either side remain visible. Fire continuously while moving, and use grenades or special attacks against clustered enemies and bosses.

Prioritize weapon upgrades, but do not take unnecessary risks to collect them. Learn enemy entry points and boss patterns, and coordinate fire with a second player rather than splitting up across the screen.

Before you begin

What should you know before playing?

  1. 1

Keep moving while firing; stationary play makes the player an easy target.

  2. 2

Use grenades against groups and armored enemies instead of saving every charge.

  3. 3

In two-player mode, stay within supporting distance and focus fire on bosses.
