How it plays
The game uses a top-down, vertically scrolling perspective. Players move through linear stages, defeat regular enemies, collect power-ups, and survive enemy projectiles before facing a stage boss.
Each character has a different attack style and a powerful ninja technique. Stages draw on different historical settings and become more difficult as enemy patterns, traps, and boss attacks intensify. The arcade version supports solo play and cooperative play for two players.
Plan your run
Stay near the lower part of the screen so incoming projectiles remain visible and you have room to react. Clear enemies before advancing whenever possible, because scrolling can expose threats from several directions.
Save bombs or ninja techniques for dense enemy formations and bosses rather than spending them on isolated targets. Learn each character’s attack range and movement speed, and use cooperative play to divide attention between opposite sides of the screen.

Ninja Commando is a 1992 arcade action game developed and published by Data East. It combines run-and-gun shooting with ninja-themed attacks in a vertically scrolling adventure. Players choose one of three warriors and fight through historical and supernatural battlefields filled with soldiers, monsters, traps, and bosses. The game is designed for fast single-player or cooperative arcade play, with straightforward movement, rapid attacks, screen-clearing powers, and limited-use bombs. Its colorful presentation and unusual time-travel premise gave it a distinctive identity, although it remained a relatively obscure Data East release compared with the company’s better-known arcade series.
