The exact effect of a sub-weapon depends on the equipped item and available spirit points.
How it plays
The game uses a side-view perspective. Ryu advances through linear stages, defeats enemies with his sword, avoids traps, and reaches a boss at the end of each area.
Ryu can jump, crouch, climb or cling to walls in suitable sections, and collect spirit points used for secondary weapons. Sub-weapons provide attacks such as projectiles or close-range options, while damage, pits, and moving hazards make positioning important.
Progress is stage-based. Checkpoints, enemy patterns, weapon pickups, and boss encounters determine each level's difficulty, and limited continues make repeated practice important.
Plan your run
Learn enemy placement instead of rushing through every screen. Use the sword at its effective range, and attack enemies from safe platforms whenever possible.
Save spirit points for bosses and difficult jumps. Recovering a preferred sub-weapon can be more valuable than immediately taking a different pickup.
Use walls and ledges to control encounters, watch for concealed hazards, and treat each checkpoint as a short practice segment. Bosses become more manageable after identifying their attack rhythm.

Ninja Ryuuken Den is a side-scrolling action platformer for the PC Engine, developed and published by Hudson Soft as an adaptation of Tecmo's Ninja Ryūkenden, the series known internationally as Ninja Gaiden. Players control the ninja Ryu Hayabusa as he investigates a conspiracy involving rival clans, ancient artifacts, and supernatural enemies. The game combines precise sword fighting, platforming, wall movement, and stage hazards across a sequence of action-focused levels. This version is notable for its enhanced audiovisual presentation and changes from the earlier home-console release, while retaining the fast, demanding style associated with the series. It is generally regarded as an interesting Japanese PC Engine reinterpretation rather than a simple one-to-one port.
